When it comes to programming, understanding the founding concepts can greatly improve student engagement and future success. In its Fourth Edition, Starting Out with Programming Logic and Design is a language-independent introductory programming book, ideal for a precursor programming course or the first unit of an introductory programming course. The text covers fundamental topics such as data types, variables, input, output, control structures, modules, functions, arrays, files, object-oriented concepts, GUI development, and event-driven programming. Designed for beginners, the text is clear and approachable, making the complex concepts accessible to every student. In this edition, Gaddis uses updated, contemporary examples to familiarize students with models and logical thought processes used in programming without further complicating them with language syntax. By using easy-to-understand pseudocode, flowcharts, and other tools, Gaddis illustrates how to design the logic of programs.

Better than Zed Shaw's Learn Python the Hard Way, because you are learning and understanding the concepts, instead of just coding without knowing the definitions of Strings, def, tuples, lists, dictionaries.

Before you jump into other programming languages, learn Python first. Then once you learn Python and get the hang of it, other programming languages will make a lot of sense.

Starting Out with Programming Logic and Design 4, Tony Gaddis, eBook -

It has a mix of readings and examples. Programming exercises and Homework at the end of the chapter helps a lot! Do them. Okay first of all, if you are me and have ZERO knowledge of programming before reading this book: If, however, you know a decent amount about programming: But, I took this class online and there were no notes.

This book is incredible, and if I managed to get a perfect score on every program I did from just reading this book I go to U of M go blue so do not think that this was an easy feat Honestly, not many.

The only one that sticks out, is if you know a lot about programming already, this book will do squat for you. It does not show incredibly advanced programs, just the main parts about python. My recommendation is that the book is fairly cheap and very good so download it. download it USED!

I got suckered into downloading a more expensive one because it came with that "KEY" that comes with the book. The "KEY" is just the download for python: I didn't even use the key. Still unsure Good luck in your choice: The university program for data analysis required this book for students who are new to programming. I taught two different grade levels. It is so so for grad students who never programmed.

I had more success teaching from my notes with jupyter notebooks. The book would be much better for High School students.

Starting out with Visual C# 4th Edition by Tony Gaddis (eBook PDF)

The book is an ok intro to python 3, but the instructor will have to supplement a lot of material and mention differences between python 2. They have left much out - too much. They do a decent job on python's object model.

For upper level tyros, it is a bit too low level. Great book for getting into the Python script language. In many cases, it seemed like the author would ramble on and talk "about" key information, but not really "get to the point. The combination of those two sources was great! Gaddis covers a lot of information that may not be, in itself, critical to the "how" part of learning, but provides a more in-depth understanding of what it going on Overall, a very good text and reference!

Great job of explaining not only python, but basic programming fundamentals. Good for beginners. Thank you Tony Gaddis for these amazing books. First I studied starting out with programming logic and design book and wow!!! Loved loved it and that made me love programming and CS, then I studied this one and I loved it. I love the programming exercises at the end of each chapter, and I love his style of organizing the book introduction, then example, then explanation for the example.

Thank you. Loose Leaf Verified download.

This book is suitable for those beginners who are comfortable learning from books. It is consistent with how colleges teach it at a fairly easy college. In general, Gaddis is a good author for programming and computer skills textbooks for beginners. The more recent of his textbooks are a little on the expensive side.

This is a looseleaf, so it is a little cheaper than the conventional editions. This is a good intro to Python book, and I would recommend it for anyone who wants an overview of Python. It's definitely suitable for people new er to programming, but still worth a casual read for experienced coders and I've found it to be a nice reference; however, if you are experienced, have an idea of what you want to do, and have more time on hand than extra cash, you can save some money by just reading through the abundance of documentation at python.
